The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block saw the return of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa voicing for all four main characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this lovable family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well be part of that very evolution. At a minimum, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
