James understood his monumental run of scoring in double figures was threatened. At the decisive instant, however, it didn't concern him.
The correct basketball play meant distributing the rock – which is exactly what he did. Following that play, the unprecedented record came to an end.
James's astounding run of over 1,200 straight NBA regular season outings scoring at least ten concluded this past Thursday, when the NBA's all-time scoring leader finished with eight points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 123-120 triumph versus Toronto. He made the clutch helper, feeding Rui Hachimura for a three-point shot at the buzzer.
“Nothing,” James said after being questioned regarding the conclusion of his run. “The important thing is we won.”
James could have tried to secure the contest – and preserved the streak – in the closing seconds, instead, he decided to make the extra pass to Hachimura stationed in the corner. Hachimura sank it, with LeBron exulted immediately.
It's about playing basketball the proper way. Make the smart play,” James remarked. That has always been my philosophy. That is the way I was instructed to play. I’ve done that for two decades.”
“LeBron is fully cognizant of his point total he's scored at all times,” commented Lakers coach the coach. “He did it as he has done throughout his career.”
James re-entered the floor for the final time with under five and a half minutes to go, the outcome and his personal record both hanging in the balance. At that stage, he had six points from 3 for 15 from the field by that point.
He got a bucket with 1:46 left to tie the game then missed a 14-footer with 1:01 left which could have gotten him into double figures.
He didn’t take one more attempt – but could have. Austin Reaves found him in the waning seconds, yet LeBron chose to make the extra pass instead.
“The basketball gods, if you do it correctly, they will reward you,” the coach concluded.
James's streak commenced on Jan. 6, 2007. It was easily the greatest streak of its kind in NBA history: Michael Jordan had 866 straight double-digit scoring games, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had 787 such games, and Karl Malone had the fourth-longest run with 575.
LeBron is such a pass-first superstar,” noted teammate a fellow Laker.
“He’s just playing the sport. The chance was there but because of who he is on the court and his personality as a person, he executed the unselfish play, dished to Hachimura and claimed the victory.”
Scoring in double figures was usually an afterthought early in the start of fourth quarters. Over the course of the record, he had attained ten points by the start of the fourth on the vast majority of occasions before this game.
However, two of those rare single-digit games after three periods took place in the last week: He recorded nine points entering the final quarter versus the Mavericks last week, and then had six points going into the fourth versus the Suns on Monday night.
LeBron was able to extend the streak in the Phoenix game. In the following contest, it concluded – yet he was celebrating regardless.
I only ever make the correct play. That comes naturally, no matter what,” James declared. If you make the smart play, the sports deities consistently giving back to me.”
