Eurovision Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Become a Calculated Tool to Gloss Over Warfare.

An recent acronym surfaced a few months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Known as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, according to health professionals such as paediatricians. Normally, it is uncommon for doctors to treat a minor who has lost their whole family. However, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where complete genealogies have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing ordinary about many doctors coming back from a devastated terrain with reports of children being deliberately targeted.

A Hell on Earth Despite a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are being blocked those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are ongoing. Officials rejects these claims, consistent with how it refutes all charges it is charged with. But while grieving children who lost parents are now suffering from the cold in makeshift tent camps, there is a little heartwarming news: apparently nothing is going to stop the international singing competition from pursuing its professed goal of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Organizers will continue to roll out a blood-red carpet for Israel, despite the fact that a number of European countries have now pulled out in protest. Because this, apparently, is what unity looks like.

Historically, Eurovision excluded Russia from taking part in 2022 because of the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was accused of irregular participation methods last year in what appears to have been an bid to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that attacks by settlers and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Overlook the situation that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Pageant Proceeds Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest turns 70 next year – nearly twice the average life expectancy of an individual in Gaza today. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it historically embodied. A competition that once promoted togetherness has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
