Eric Adams Plans to Back Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams revealed his decision to support Andrew Cuomo in the forthcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Yet, in a new development, Adams made a U-turn, announcing he now plans to support Cuomo in neighborhoods where he holds strong support.

“It's essential to really wake up the Black and brown communities that have suffered from urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams commented.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their rents increase due to gentrification and they have been disregarded in those neighborhoods, and I plan to visit to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and organizations and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them motivated.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the contest between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose growing support has made headlines internationally and represented aspirations for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent stated they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his re-election campaign as an independent after facing legal accusations which were later dropped in exchange for Adams’s cooperation with federal immigration raids across the city.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by saying, “Andrew and I will appear together this evening.”

This development came a day after the two politicians were seen attending a game side-by-side at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
